Annual Pioneer Day Picnic
Sunday, July 22, 2012 (4th Sunday)
3:00-7:00 PM
Fort Ward Park in Alexandria, VA
Picnic Area #4
You are invited to join Affirmation G&L Mormons, DC Chapter, in celebrating our heritage and our ongoing journey as gay Mormon pioneers with a picnic at historic Fort Ward Park in Alexandria. The pioneers who journeyed across the plains and through the desert to settle the Salt Lake Valley were looking for freedom to live their lives without persecution from a society which did not understand their lifestyle. Today, gay Mormons are as much pioneers in spirit within a society which still does not fully understand or accept us as we are.
Come enjoy the great outdoors and fellowship in the best preserved of the forts that were built to protect Washington, DC during the American Civil War. Today the grounds are a 40 acre park; a green, shady oasis with facilities and easy parking. We'll be in picnic area #4. (see the enclosed map) The Chapter will provide hot dogs, burgers, bread, condiments, watermelon and beverages. Please bring side dishes, salads & desserts. You may bring anything else you prefer to grill also, such as veggie burgers or steaks.
We have moved the time slot this year due to Alexandria City policy on reserving the picnic areas. I hope this time will allow folks to do Sunday Church or brunch engagements and come by for dinner. Even if you have other plans, just drop by to socialize for a while. The event will only be cancelled for prolonged, severe weather. Call Olin (703-864-5527) if you need an update. Also, guests are welcome! You can also bring your dog.
Driving Directions are given below. Need help in arranging transportation? Contact Olin (cell 703-864-5527) or Fred (703-795-8678) in advance. There is Alexandria DASH bus service past the park hourly on Sunday's on the AT-5 line from King Street Station (check their website for current schedules), but you can arrange for a ride by calling!
